Do not go back to normality
“A better planet is a dream that begins to unfold when each of us decides to improve himself” – Mahatma Ghandi
Sustainable is “the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” states the Brundtland Report, as the report entitled «Our common future» and published in 1987 has been named after the World Commission on Environment and Development’s chairwoman, Gro Harlem Brundtland.
800 millions people in the world are affected by under nutrition and the 40% of the global population suffers shortage of water.
In 2014 the 30% of urban inhabitants worldwide used to live in slums and in precarious conditions and in 2016 more than 2 thousand million people still lived with no electricity or with difficult access to energy.
In terms of ecological footprint, nowadays humanity is using the equivalent of a planet and an half; from 1990 till today an increase of 50% in the global Carbon Dioxide emissions occurred and if we keep the current trend the global temperature will increase by 3°C within the end of the XXI century with terrible consequences on environmental and social balances.
These data highlight just some of the topics related to the goals included in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity, undersigned in September 2015 by the governments of the 193 member states of the United Nations: 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets, with an integrated vision of the economic, social and environmental dimensions, which the involved countries engaged to reach within 2030.
A project that requires the commitment of people, companies, institutions and governments; a goal as ambitious as necessary if we want to leave to the next generations an heritage which to build solid foundations for the future evolution and development on.
The forced stop during the lockdown has offered to all of us the opportunity to restart with new priorities in our daily routine, to set new values which to build the business plans on, to redefine the goals of the business development, to read the reality with new eyes and to embrace a more aware vision of the interconnections between our actions and the background we live in, so that we can create a more complete and versatile value that not only consider the economic growth but also promotes authentic and long lasting common good.
We have the chance to drive our choices towards a substantial change.
We have the chance not to go back to normality.
